Aerial view of United Airlines passenger planes docked in a terminal of Newark Airport in Newark, New Jersey, on May 11, 2024. Major airlines and an industry trade association asked a federal appeals court to toss out a new Department of Transportation rule requiring earlier disclosure of add-on fees during flight booking. The Biden administration introduced the airline fee disclosure rule in September 2022. Airlines for America said in a statement to CNBC on Monday that the rule will "confuse consumers" and "complicate the buying process." "Airlines already provide consumers with complete disclosure of all fees associated with air travel before they purchase a ticket," the group said in the statement.

Dear Tripped Up,After graduating from college in 2022 and working for a year, I used my bonus and some of my savings to book a nine-day Mediterranean cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line for my partner and me. Our $7,657 cruise package included airfare from Atlanta to Barcelona, Spain, via Newark, and Norwegian’s own BookSafe Travel Protection Plan, which included travel insurance and also allowed me to “cancel for any reason” for a 75 percent credit. So we spent the night in the Newark airport, paid for a return flight to Atlanta the next morning and canceled the cruise and remaining air legs. I would have moved on to help another Tripped Up reader, but Norwegian’s use of the responsibility-shirking phrase “as a gesture of good will” bugged me. I wanted to know why BookSafe didn’t cover you, and what other cruise customers can do to protect themselves.

New York CNN —The federal government is allowing airlines to continue to run reduced flight schedules to major airports serving New York City and Washington in hopes of curbing flight cancellations and reducing the burden on short-staffed air traffic controllers. New York CNN —Hundreds of thousands of US airline customers were stranded this week as severe weather grounded planes and led to canceled flights. As of 8:30 am ET, FlightAware tracking service reported there were 687 flights canceled and another 1,200 delays. Although that’s better than the 2,200 canceled flights in each of the last two days, or the more than 16,000 delayed flights between Monday and Tuesday, it’s hardly a smooth-running operation. Staffing shortageThe US air travel system is unable to recover quickly from widespread weather problems, because it doesn’t have the bodies to deal with the disruptions. The airline canceled 461 flights this past Saturday and Sunday and delayed another 1,972 flights, according to data from flight tracking site FlightAware.

Feb 7 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden on Tuesday harshly criticized U.S. airlines saying they were charging families unfair fees and vowing to implement new consumer protections. Airlines for America (A4A), a group representing Delta Air Lines (DAL.N), United Airlines (UAL.O), American Airlines (AAL.O), Southwest Airlines (LUV.N) and others said Tuesday its member carriers do not charge fees to sit together. At the start of a three-week trial in Boston, Justice Department attorney William Jones said the Northeast Alliance, unveiled in July 2020, is a "de facto merger" of American and JetBlue's operations in Boston and New York. Hayes acknowledged that he had been critical of previous joint ventures similar to the Northeast Alliance. The trial started after a week in which U.S. judges ruled against the government in two antitrust fights: sugar and insurance. JetBlue is pursuing a $3.8 billion acquisition of low-cost rival Spirit Airlines (SAVE.N), subject to antitrust review. Hayes has said that no matter how the fight over the Northeast Alliance ends, it would be good for JetBlue's effort to buy Spirit.
